D2 Survivors Hardcore explained
Hardcore is available in the developer’s newer D2 Survivors. It uses a separate save, and a hero who dies stays dead. Our homepage’s fixed 20261020.1 edition does not include it.
Which D2 Survivors has Hardcore?
The developer introduced Hardcore in build 20261027.2 and announced it on X on October 27. Builds .3 and .4 add exit confirmation and a leaderboard repair. Check the build displayed by your game before following these instructions.
| Edition | Hardcore availability |
|---|---|
| This website · 20261020.1 | Not included. Reloading our player will not add it. |
| Developer’s releases from 20261027.2 | Hardcore is described in the release notes. Use the developer’s website or current app and check its build. |

Where do you enter Hardcore?
According to the developer’s 20261027.2 notes, the Dark Wanderer beside the camp’s bonfire takes you into Hardcore. Read the game’s warning before proceeding. The author describes a separate nighttime camp and a graveyard for fallen Hardcore heroes.
If you cannot find the Wanderer in this website’s game, that is expected: its fixed version predates this feature. If you are on the developer’s current version, check the build and the warning shown in your own game rather than looking for a setting in our website controls.
What happens to your hero and save?
A Hardcore hero’s death is permanent. The author describes Hardcore as a save of its own. Treat it as a separate mode, not a way to continue the same ordinary run with a different difficulty setting.
Keep a private export of your existing progress before switching games or versions. Backups help preserve your source data; they are not a promised way to revive a dead Hardcore hero. The release notes say that a dead hero remains dead on the leaderboard and a later-played copy of that hero’s save does not rank.
Our website and the developer’s website have separate storage. Opening the developer’s game does not automatically move your hero there. We have not verified transfers between our fixed edition and Hardcore, nor whether a particular backup can be used in that mode. Follow the export, backup and import precautions and keep the source untouched if an import fails.
How are Hardcore leaderboards different?
Hardcore has its own boards and an experience ladder. The author’s website switches between Softcore and Hardcore, and the Hardcore camp’s book shows its own results. Fallen heroes are marked in red.
The 20261027.2 notes say Hardcore rankings require the leaderboard to have observed the hero’s runs from start to finish. Do not assume an offline clear or restored backup will qualify. A result missing from a board is also not, by itself, proof that the local hero save is missing.
Read the reason shown by the current game and check the developer’s leaderboard ↗. Its submission controls and data handling belong to that game; see the developer’s privacy notice ↗. This website’s Analytics setting does not control the developer’s game, and our fixed edition has no leaderboard connection.
What changed after Hardcore launched?
- 20261027.3: Save and Exit Game asks for confirmation, as does the desktop app’s EXIT. This reduces accidental exits; it is not a promise that every part of a run is retained.
- 20261027.4: the author reports that Hardcore heroes whose runs began during leaderboard maintenance can rank again, and maintenance no longer causes that loss of ranking. This is a specific fix, not a guarantee that every unranked run qualifies.
For the rest of the recent changes, use the October 27 update summary.
Before your first Hardcore run
- Confirm that you opened the developer’s newer edition, not our fixed player.
- Prepare your own Diablo II or D2R files if requested. See file setup and desktop downloads.
- Export your current source save when available and keep it separate from any destination backup.
- Read the Dark Wanderer’s warning and accept that death is permanent before entering.
- Read the current save/exit warning and leaderboard notices. Do not experiment with your only save to try to qualify for a board.
Sources and review scope
This explainer is based on the developer’s build notes ↗ for 20261027.2–.4 and the creator’s Hardcore announcement ↗. Reviewed October 28, 2026. We have not independently played a Hardcore run, verified its death recovery or tested cross-version imports.
